Course or Career Choice After Leaving Cert

Factors that need to be taken into account:

• Check most recent information received from CAO regarding New Courses.   Cancelled Courses, or Changes to Titles of Courses

• Regarding choices now being made, research the programmes and ensure that they have the necessary entry requirements, check module information for course detail.
• All courses in the CAO system are still open to students up to Sunday next 1st July, including those not already applied for with the exception of restricted courses which should have been applied for by 1st Feb.

• Applicants should list courses on CAO form in order of preference.

• Students need to take into account entry requirements for courses, especially if they changed from higher to lower papers on their leaving cert. Check information on www.cao.ie or www.qualifax.ie (National Database).

• Information regarding the DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) and HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) should now be known to applicants.  Results regarding HPAT (Health Professions Admission Test) were released on Monday of this week. .

• QQI (FETAC / PLC) courses may still be applied for and can be a useful way of progressing to third level or indeed for entry into the job market.

• Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship Programme which can lead to a Honours Level 8 Degree is also a very attractive consideration for students, see details on Insurance Institute
• website www.iii.ie/apprenticeships, in addition to Insurance Apprenticeship, there is also apprenticeships available for Accounting Technician Programmes, as well as the traditional areas offered now by CETB Cork Education Training Board formally (FAS)

• Springboard (Upskilling programme available to those who are on various state benefits) can now be applied for.

• Grant Applications must be made by 1st August, and are now being processed by SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland). Further information from SUSI support desk: 0761 08 7874. It is advisable to make grant applications as soon as possible.

Leaving Cert. Exam results are expected by Wed. 15h Aug, with CAO offers by Mon. 20th  August.
